How I got here
I was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and grew up on Rua Divinópolis, the very street where Milton Nascimento and his friends founded the Clube da Esquina and changed Brazilian music forever. Even so, the voices that pulled me in first were Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil.
Music started with my mom. She sang to my sister and me all the time, and those songs never left me.
I never had a teacher. Guitar, voice and every instrument I play, I taught myself, one song at a time. That's still how I work: listening first, then finding the version of a song that fits the people in front of me.
I started playing events professionally in 2011, and Southern California became home. Since then I've played hundreds of nights, from golden-hour terraces at the Montage and Terranea to AT&T's celebration for its top performers at the Hotel del Coronado, galas for Make-A-Wish, and the Illuminate Life Gala at The Beverly Hilton.
Today I play solo, as a duo, or with a full band of trusted players, and I plan every evening with the people hosting it, so the music feels like it was made for their room.
Everything starts with energy, and music is the closest thing to it I know. Most mornings begin with meditation, sometimes a full hour of it. That's where I align my energy, so that when the first note lands I'm as close as I can get to the vibration of the universe.
At home I have a full studio, where I record and hold sessions with some of the great musicians I get to work with. I'm just as drawn to design: building sets, shaping a space and creating a whole world for one night is as much a part of my work as the music. And when I need to reset, I head outside: camping, a swim, a long walk on the beach.
